2009 KHSI Expo Sept 10-12, Corvallis, OR

2009 KHSI Expo! Sept 10-12, Corvallis, OR, Benton co Fairgrounds. 86 people attended this exciting and fun event!	Thursday close to 40 car pooled first to Abundant Life Farm near Dallas. Scott and Marilyn Jondle showed us how they pasture raise and market sheep, cattle, chickens and other livestock.
We ate box lunces on the way to Jon Carters commer­cial hair sheep farm near Scio, he's using Wiltshire Polled genes AI to improve his flock.	At the OSU sheep barn Tom Nichols gave us some good insights on newborn lamb care
We had a fun evening welcoming folks to Oregon at our Host hotel in Corvallis	On Friday Dr Kreg Ley­master, NE gave some interesting talks on genetics and performance; "The Katahdin: Just another Breed, or an Exception?"
Dr. Woody Lane, L Livestock Services, OR, gave a couple very informative and useful talks.	Dr Lynn Hermann-Hoesing, USDA-ARS in Pullman, WA spoke on using ge­netic tools to identify genetic disease in breeding stock, especially OPP
Dr Jim Miller, LA, gave good practical advice on parasite management and control and decreasing resistance to dewormers	Dr Charles Parker, Ohio spoke on how we can market breeding stock in the 21st century.

At the Ewe-Th Camp Fri afternoon John Stromquist shows Kara Minor and Breanna Hisey how to select and handle lambs.	Howard Brown looks on as John helps Breanna with a lamb, he later surprized her by donating a ewe lamb to her!
Adults got in on the action as Dr Leroy Boyd showed how to measure size and muscling.	Saturday morning started with Dr Parker with his 4 legged stool demonstration of how we need to balance conformation, pedegree and performance as we select our breeding stock.

Clark Co Fair Aug 6-11

Lambs are a great learning experience for all.	The KHSI banner over the breeders pens.

The Katahdins showed against Horned Dorsets in "Other meat breeds"	And did well! Debra Blake and Breanna Hisey with fall ram lambs and Karen Kenagy with a yearling ram.
Our ewes did good too!	Katahdin Flock.
And a Katahdin took 2nd in the meat lamb on the rail class.

Country Lifestyle Experience gave us a chance to put together a Power Point on the Katahdin sheep and present it to the modest crowd that attended that event in Albany on April 10-11. We had a display set up with pictures, info and sheep who were shedding so we were able to talk to folks about this aspect of Katahdins. Of course the baby lambs were a hit.

Yearling ewes displayed shed out coats.	Two year old with second group of lambs is a good example of productivity.
The lambs were a great attraction.

We had a wonderful time of visiting and talking Katahdin to the good sized crowd that attended the event at Ruth and Robert Bleau's place in Grass Valley California on April 4. They did a great job of putting on a fun and educational event, fed and housed us. The weather was beautiful and it was great to see all the sheep and their beautiful place.
